What is a screening for oral cancer?
During your examination, your dentist will visually inspect your soft tissues for indications of mouth cancer and anything that appears unusual. These may include recurrent ulcers, white or red regions, lumps and bumps, and unusual patterns on the tongue. They may also examine your neck and under your jawline for swelling.
Why do I need a screening for oral cancer?
Oral Cancer is the sixth most prevalent cancer in the globe. In Ireland, approximately 8,300 persons are diagnosed with oral cancer each year. Screening is a straightforward and efficient method for routinely examining the mouth and ruling out any suspicious conditions.
What measures of prevention can I take?
Oral cavity abnormal cell division is the origin of mouth cancer. The two most prevalent risk factors for oral cancer are alcohol consumption and tobacco use. Increasing alcohol consumption, smoking, or both increases the likelihood of developing mouth cancer. Age, HPV (human papillomavirus), and diet are additional determinants.
What occurs if the dentist observes an abnormality?
If possible, your dentist will point out any visible abnormalities for you to examine or have evaluated by a second professional. In most cases, this is simply to rule out anything serious, but it is always preferable to double-check. Early intervention has a significant influence on the efficacy of treatment.
