Inlays & Onlays
What is an Inlay or Onlay?
Inlays and Onlays are custom fillings created by experienced dental technicians in a specialised dental laboratory. When the natural tooth structure can no longer sustain a traditional filling, inlays and onlays are used as a more conservative treatment for restoring teeth.
What is the distinction between inlays and onlays?
While inlays and onlays serve the same purpose, an inlay is designed to fit inside the tooth's cavity, between the cusps. Onlays are bonded to the biting surface of the tooth and typically include one or more cusps.
Are Inlays and Onlays coloured like teeth?
The majority of inlays/onlays are composed of composite resin or porcelain and are available in a variety of shades to complement natural teeth. When additional durability is necessary, gold or zirconium may occasionally be used. Your dental team will discuss the materials and hues used to construct your restoration in consultation with you.
How are Inlays and Onlays Different from Traditional White Fillings?
While white fillings can also be used to restore cavities, they are better adapted for minor repairs. Inlays and onlays are better appropriate for complex cases that require precise filling. The precision of their design reduces the likelihood of erosion and shrinkage that can occur with large white fillings.
Is anxiolytic therapy a viable option prior to inlay or onlay treatment?
At Smile Hub Dental Clinic, your convenience is our top priority. We utilise the Enjoyable Dentistry Technique to reduce anxiety and alleviate dental phobia. This technique is so pleasurable that many of our patients request it because, as its name suggests, it makes routine dental care soothing and enjoyable!
